How to learn English grammar?2

by Torsten Daerr

Dear Friend,

How to learn English grammar? That's one of the questions you probably ask yourself several times a week. Well, you are not the only one. There are millions of people worldwide who want to know how they can improve their English grammar skills. I receive a dozen or so emails every day from English learners from India, Vietnam, Pakistan, Indonesia and many other other countries asking me to explain the tenses, the conditionals, phrasal verbs, you name it. Since I'm both a learner and a teacher of the English language I've been constantly searching for new and more effective ways of learning English grammar and of course I have come up with a lot of answers and ideas. The most important piece of advice I'd like to give you is this: Always try to 'pick the brains' of other people who have been in a similar situation to yours. In other words, find a person whose command of the English language is excellent and ask them how they achieved it. That's what I have been doing since about 1983 and I'm more than happy to share some of my learning secrets with you, Friend.

You know, in 1995 something extraordinary happened to me: I met my English language tutor and mentor, Alan Townend. Every since that day I have learned so much with and from Alan that I could fill books. One of the most valuable skills Alan has taught me is how to learn English grammar. Yes Friend, you guessed that right -- I'm going to introduce you to some of the learning techniques I picked up from Alan. Because he has so much expertise, I suggest that you take Alan's advice one piece at a time. Let's start with an overview on 'How to learn grammar'. If you read the information on the following page, you will find a lot of useful tips and I'd really like to urge you to actually 'study' the article rather than just read it once.

Are you ready? The following link will take you to a forum discussion that includes another link to the actual article: How to learn English grammar?

When you get to the part that's headed 'Conversations About English' ,you will be able to see how Alan suggests you approach English grammar. He engages you in an active dialogue about English and about learning English. Very soon you will feel as if you are talking with Alan you and you will forget that learning grammar rules is often difficult and burdensome. While speaking to Alan you are automatically going to pick up a huge number of new phrases and word combinations without even realizing it. That's why Alan's method is so powerful and effective. Try it out and let me know what you think!

Friend, as you know many of our email lessons contain one or more interactive tests that Alan wrote for you. This time we'll take another 'Responses' test. Do you remember what the word 'response' means? Yes, it's another word for 'answer', 'reply' or 'reaction'. In the following test you will learn a variety of expressions and here are some of them:
- not to stand a chance
- to have some good news
- to collect money for charity
- to come top in the exam grades
- to go bankrupt
- hard luck
- to abolish income tax

And with no further ado -- here is the test: Responses 7

Friend, if you have any questions regarding the test above please click on the 'Explanation' links next to each test question. Here is an example: Conditional Sentence?

Now it's time for some listening practice again. In the following audio recording you will hear Sue talk about Katrin and Karsten, two survey engineers from Germany who enjoy SCUBA diving in their leisure time: Survey Engineering and SCUBA Diving.
