Master the 30/30 Challenge! (part 1)

As we said earlier, learning English like a winner means you must assess your study habits and change them if necessary. Your goal is to surround yourself with spoken English every day, even if you don't live in an English-speaking country. How can you achieve this? The answer is the "30/30 Challenge". To master this challenge means you must listen to authentic English for at least 30 minutes a day for at least 30 consecutive days. Once you get through your first 30 days, you are well on your road to success. Why? Because if you really listen to authentic English for 30 minutes a day for 30 days straight, you will have developed a new and powerful habit: the habit of exposing yourself to English daily. Now, 30 minutes a day might not seem like much, but remember that you have to keep this activity up for at least 30 days in a row.

Just to make this crystal clear: if you want to become a successful English speaker, you need to master the challenge of listening to English every single day without interruption for a minimum of 30 days. So if for any reason on one day, you don't listen to English for at least 30 minutes, then you must start your challenge all over again from Day 1.

Here is an example of what your day might look like when you are pursuing the 30/30 challenge: you get up, and the first thing you do is turn on your TV set to a channel such as BBC, SkyNews, CNN or NBC. It's not important what channel you choose, just as long as its programming is in English.

After you have turned on the TV, you start your daily routine – you brush your teeth, eat breakfast, get dressed, and get ready for work or school. Don't let the TV distract you; all you have to do is turn it on so you can listen to it in the background. There's no need for you to sit in front of the screen or try to understand everything you hear. This would probably be very frustrating. With the 30/30 Challenge method, your ears and brain will naturally adjust to English sounds, and you will become more and more perceptive of the language. The 30/30 Challenge is an activity that serves many purposes, one of which is to overcome your inner resistance to real spoken English and your fear that you can't understand native speakers.
