Former President Billy Thompson who was elected to office in 1981 and reelected to a second term in 1985 died Wednesday at the age of 95. The cause of death is unknown. According to a statement from his family, Thompson died peacefully at his home in Nantucket, Maine. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Billy Jr., Ted and Joe; and a daughter Sylvia. Last year, Thompson was discharged from Maryland General where doctors implanted a pacemaker to improve his heart performance. President Cohen issued a statement saying that he and first lady Karen Cohen were “greatly saddened” to hear of the former president’s death. “We mourn the loss of a great leader and our 35th president will always have a special place in America’s memory.” Funeral services will be held this Friday, 10 AM at the National Cemetery.
