Boston Dynamics is an engineering and robotics design company. Recently, it began leasing its first commercial product—a robotic dog. Spot, the semiautonomous, four-legged dog, weighs seventy pounds and walks up to three miles per hour. The machine is capable of tasks such as walking up and down stairs, dancing, hauling trucks and opening doors. According to American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts State Police Department (MSPD) leased Spot from Boston Dynamics for a ninety-day evaluation. Though, Kade Crockford, director of the ALCU of Massachusetts’s Technology for Liberty Program insists that the public knows very little about how these technologies are being deployed. It has been reported that the MSPD’s bomb squad has used Spot on two separate occasions to examine suspicious items and clear high risk areas. However, Crockford says there must be laws in place to keep pace with technological advances to prevent police agencies from infringing upon civil liberties. Michael Perry, VP for Business Development at Boston Dynamics, on the other hand, says they leased Spot intentionally so they could revoke a robot that was misused. As technology continues to advance, striking a balance between civil liberty and public safety remains an extremely difficult task, indeed.
