In January 2020, Scientists in the UK found a new type of immune cell that can kill most forms of cancer. However, they weren’t even looking for this cell, in fact they discovered it by accident! The researchers from Cardiff University in Wales were actually testing samples of human blood, hoping to find cells that could fight bacteria, but instead they stumbled upon a completely new type of T-cell. This T-cell can scan the body for cancerous cells and attack them, while leaving healthy tissues unharmed. This works similarly to the way in which white blood cells can kill an infection. The discovery of this cancer-killing cell represents a monumental moment in the hunt for a cure to cancer for two reasons. First, it suggests that many members of the public may already be immune to cancer. Secondly, if scientists can find a way to control, modify and distribute these cells, they could be provided to all cancer patients. However, progress is only beginning now. So far, scientists have only tested this research on animals and cells in the laboratory. There are many more safety precautions and tests needed before they can begin trialling it on humans.
