These days many of us feel pulled in different directions by family, work, studies and other commitments. At times this can leave us feeling as if our mind is one long, infinite to-do list. This sensation was so intense for product designer Ryder Carroll that he came up with a solution: keeping a journal.
Writing in a paper journal is a clear way for us to visualize our goals and concerns, come up with strategies and understand how we’re spending our time and energy.
Interested? Grab a notebook and pen and let’s get started.
First, you need to create a mental inventory. Write down the things that you must do, then the things that you feel you should be doing, followed by the things that you would like to do.
Next, think about why you’re doing each of these things. In order to be mindful of how you’re spending your time, it’s good to check in with yourself and make sure that you’re doing things that you really want to be doing.
Third, go through your list and ask yourself two questions: “Is it vital?” and “Does it matter to me or someone I love?” If you answer “no” to both questions, cross that item off your list. This will help you to focus on your priorities.
Fourth, break down the remaining items into individual projects. Each project should consist of a clearly defined list of steps and tasks that should take less than a month to complete.
Finally, spend at least five minutes a day revising your list. It’s important that it continues to reflect your values and priorities. When something doesn’t matter to you anymore, simply cross it out and let it go.
