Humanity is facing a real threat to its survival due to antibiotic resistance. England’s former chief medical officer Dame Sally Davies has said that the loss of effective antibiotics would result in deaths caused by common infections. Bacterial mutations are the reason for the ineffectiveness of numerous antibiotics, so researches are tirelessly searching for new sources of drugs. However, there might still be some hope in this apocalyptic scenario. One cannabis compound, cannabigerol (CBG) was exceptionally effective at killing MRSA, which is one of the most common superbugs found in hospitals. Tests showed that CBG also killed the persister cells of MRSA, which are responsible for the repetition of infections. After the effectiveness of CBG has been established in the lab, the scientists started animal testing. The study, which is under review at the ACS Infectious Diseases journal, showed that CBG cured mice of MRSA infections, making it as effective as vancomycin.
