The Republic of Molossia is a micronation located on a small plot of land in the state of Nevada, USA. It has a population of 33 people, the majority of whom are expatriates living in the United States.
Micronations are self-declared independent states that want to become countries. At the moment there are about 67 micronations in the world. It’s not difficult to found a micronation - the first step is simply to declare that it exists. Then you have to decide on the details, such as what kind of government you support, the national animal, and of course the name of the nation.
The Republic of Molossia was founded in 1977 by two teenagers, Kevin Baugh and James Spielman. Kevin Baugh is still the president of Molossia, which he says is a military dictatorship. Molossia boasts its own customs office, currency, navy, postal service and rocket program. Molossia is open to tourists from April 15th - October 15th, although visitors are asked not to arrive unannounced. A sightseeing tour of Molossia includes the Friendship Gateway, which was built to symbolize inclusiveness and openness.
While you’re there, you can also stop by the bank of Molossia, where you can exchange dollars for the national currency of Molossia, the valora.
One visitor to Molossia commented that it’s nice to see that the president of Molossia has such a good sense of humor about his micronation. “Obviously, he’s put lots of time and money into creating this micronation. It’s rare to meet someone with such imagination.”
