For decades, doctors have advised us that we should be consuming much less fat, and many more carbohydrates to look after our long term heart-health. Grains and cereals were recommended, while red meat and eggs were frowned upon. But in the last decade, the conventional wisdom has been questioned. More and more people are doing the complete opposite, and have begun eating a high fat, low carbohydrate diet. They claim that this diet actually leads to weight loss, because it forces the body to use fat as fuel, rather than the sugar that is formed by carbohydrates. Science is divided over whether this diet is actually healthy though, as some experts claim that it can prevent heart disease, while others claim that it can cause it. Also, the type of fat that people consume is coming the topic of a lot of debate. Some people trying this diet eat lots of red meat and dairy products, while others lower their animal fat consumption and fill up on natural fats like avocado, almonds, olive oil and macadamia nuts. However, one thing that nutritionists seems to agree on is that certain refined and processed carbohydrates such as white bread, white rice and breakfast cereals are indeed quite bad for us, as they contain a lot of sugar. So maybe that’s the key - cut out sugar and live a long life?
