Animals are a great deal cleverer than they’re given credit for. There’s an abundance of evidence out there proving that many of them have quite high emotional intelligence, and even a moral compass in some cases. But are we human beings the only animals that have an idea of God? Even if we don’t believe in God ourselves, we’re familiar with the idea, but how about other life forms? Well, there’s no exclusive evidence that suggests that they believe in any God, however there is quite a large body of evidence that suggests that some animals perform rituals and may even have spiritual experiences.
For example, elephants are well known to mourn and grieve the death of other elephants, whereas chimpanzees have been documented dancing in ecstasy at the sight of waterfalls, and even creating rock piles in a somewhat ritualistic manner.
So it appears that some species of animals do have an awareness of life and death, and indeed the wonder of the world, but as for whether they believe in a creator or an afterlife, we can’t know for sure just yet.
