Robots VS teachers: does artificial intelligence threaten schools

by Carrie Duncan

It seems that artificial intelligence exists somewhere far away, in the laboratories of scientists and inventors. It is already a part of our lives.

More and more parents are turning to artificial intelligence in educating their children. There is a feedback loop, too, where developers of artificial intelligence are using techniques from the pedagogy that parents have been using since the first days of their child's birth.

Repetition is the mother of learning
Any parent knows that in the first days after birth, the baby does not react to those around him. But the child is growing, and parents are leafing through books, naming what is depicted in the pictures: here's a bunny and here's a wolf. Each artist has a different bunny, but the child already recognizes both the bunny and the wolf in the new illustrations.

The principle of reusable demonstration is used by the creators of artificial intelligence: for example, more and more companies are switching to a pass system where AI recognizes employees, so they don't need passes. A similar system is being prepared for entry into educational institutions.

Can artificial intelligence make a mistake? It can if it hasn't seen a picture like this before. And the child is wrong. It's like a child yelling: "Daddy, look, a mouse!" And in fact, it was a rat running. The baby will be told how mice differ from rats. And the artificial intelligence will get another batch of pictures, so it won't confuse one with the other. So the techniques for teaching the baby and the artificial intelligence are similar, although there are differences.

Do as I do
A child copies the movements of other people. This is visible, for example, on the playground. If the playground is empty, the child is passive. Another thing is when children play on it: they climb somewhere, the child begins to repeat after them. He will learn on his own, although parents can correct his movements, even without their help he will learn what others are doing.

This same principle of repeating the actions of others is laid down in the training of artificial intelligence. It is shown what humans do. To do this, the human is connected to sensors that transmit signals for actions from the human to the robot.

Can Artificial Intelligence Replace Teachers
People train artificial intelligence, and then robots endowed with it replace humans. Artificial intelligence is being introduced into all professions, including pedagogy. But can we always trust it? And what can we do to increase our trust in it?

The teacher closely monitors the students, at the appearance of signs that the study of education is not achieving its goals, the teacher changes his approach to teaching. It is universal, so it can respond to the student without making gross errors.

Artificial intelligence is another matter. It always learns for specific activities. When using artificial intelligence, you need to be able to distinguish those tasks that it can do from those that it can't. Otherwise, instead of the expected benefits, you can get significant harm. A robot cannot be given an activity that is beyond the capabilities of the artificial intelligence it is embedded in.

When can AI replace a teacher? For example, when checking your homework. For example, services like McEssay do this work.

What happens during homework? An excellent student does his homework quickly and easily, proving that he already knows everything. A "C" student makes mistakes, corrects them, looks at the textbook, and then worries, waiting for the teacher's grade. It is a stressful situation. Some of the teachers can reassure parents by telling them that there is no learning without stress. But the stress comes not from the student's mistake, but the grade.

When the work is checked by artificial intelligence, it looks only at the correctness of the homework. When an error occurs, the student is immediately alerted to it. He comprehends one individual error, and the artificial intelligence can generate a new assignment to make sure there is no more error. The difference between an excellent student and a "C" student will manifest itself in the speed at which the assignment is completed. If the "C" student can complete it, he can catch up with the "A" student after a certain number of lessons. He no longer feels like a hopeless outsider.

So will we see the kind of artificial intelligence that, over time, will always be more effective than the teacher? Some people think it's just a matter of time. After all, artificial intelligence is doing more and more complex work. But there's a "but": AI can't be moved from one type of work to another. A robot waiter who needs to satisfy a customer can't perform the tasks of a robot soccer player to beat the other team. Specialization in only a narrow range of tasks is an essential difference between artificial intelligence and human intelligence.

The school provides not only knowledge but also certain qualities and morals. So before deciding to use artificial intelligence in the educational process, we need to consider how it can affect the formation of personality.
