2) "I want to learn English in order to better understand my own language and culture." When you study a foreign language, you also learn more about your mother tongue and your own cultural attitudes and viewpoints. You learn your native language automatically, without any conscious effort, but when you study a foreign language, you take a closer look at your own language at the same time – and you'll be surprised how many new things you learn about it. A language reflects the mentality of its speakers, and you will also take a fresh look at your own culture and way of thinking. There is an English saying, "You don't know what you don't know", and that's very true. You take for granted that you know your own language thoroughly and that there is little more to know about it. However, when you start studying English in earnest, you'll see that this has a very positive effect on your skills in both languages.
