Speaking English for 20 seconds a day?

by Torsten Daerr

Dear Friend,

As you know learning English is very much like practicing a sport. Let's say you want to improve your stamina and decide to go jogging. So on Monday and Tuesday morning you actually get up 30 minutes earlier than usual and you jog in the park for about 15 minutes. Then, on Wednesday morning it's raining hard and you decide to take a short break from your new fitness program. You say to yourself: 'As soon as the rain stops I'll go jogging again'. On Thursday morning the sun is shining again and the weather is perfect for another jog. Just when you are about to leave the house your cell phone rings and your boss says that you need to get into the office half an hour earlier to prepare a sales presentation for an unexpected client. Of course giving a presentation to new potential clients is more important than your jogging program and if you are really honest, you didn't want to do any exercise that morning anyway.

That's why you quickly change into your smartest office apparel and off you go to work. You have a tough day there and by the time you get home all you want is to take a long hot shower and put your feet up. You switch on the telly and watch a couple of your favorite serials: The Simpsons, CSI Miami, Dr. House and Monk. Sure enough you don't realize how time has flown and in the twinkling of an eye it's already 1:30 am -- time for bed! When the alarm clock rings the next morning, all you want is to go back to sleep chasing that dream you have of seeing yourself lying on the beach with a cocktail in your hand. Needless to say, there are no thoughts on your mind of jogging. You slog through the day consuming considerable amounts of caffeine and taurine. The jogging project seems very distant and when the new week comes round, you barely remember the project at all.

Friend, Every day I meet people who tell me that they want to improve their English speaking skills but they don't know why. Based on my experience it is extremely difficult to motivate yourself to speak English when you are constantly surrounded by people who only speak your native language. Since you are a subscriber to our newsletter you are facing the same problem: You don't have enough speaking practice. That's why we have started a new project for you called 'Speaking English for 20 seconds a day'. From now on you can improve your English speaking skills by posting a 20 second voice recording on our forum. If you like, you can first listen to what other learners and English teachers have to say. Or you can 'jump right in' and post your first recording to get immediate feedback from your personal English teacher and fellow forum members. All you need is a headset (a microphone with headphones). Are you ready to take part in the '20-speaking-project'? Then click this link: Speaking English for 20 seconds a day?

Best regards
