Thank you very much ;-)

by Torsten Daerr

Dear Friend,

How much do you want to improve your speaking skills? In other words, what are you ready to do to achieve a good English pronunciation and most importantly to raise your level of self-confidence? I'm asking because you now have the unique opportunity to learn to speak English almost like a native speaker and I'll tell you about it at the end of this email. But first, I'd like you to take another of our free online English tests. This one is all about the little words 'many', 'much', 'a lot' and 'lots'.

First of all, I'd like to point out that 'a lot' is always spelled as two words -- so many people seem to spell it 'alot' which unfortunately is wrong. Secondly, as you probably remember, we use 'many' with countable and 'much' with uncountable nouns. That's a piece of cake, isn't it? Things get a bit more difficult when a noun can be both countable as well as uncountable such as 'detail'. There can be 'much detail' but also 'many details'. Of course you will find the answer on our forum here: detail vs. details

So the best way to learn about all these differences between countable and uncountable nouns is to read a lot of texts in English and then to ask specific questions on our forum. Please keep in mind that learning is all about asking the right questions. The more questions you ask, the better. And the faster you will learn. But back to our test which is here: Much or many?

Friend, how did you score in the test? You probably remember that you can always check your own learning progress by looking at your progress page. This page contains a lot of information about your learning activities such as how much time you have spent completing our tests, which tests you have completed and when, how many questions you have answered correctly and how often you have completed which test. In addition, you can also check your current position in our Top 100 Learners List.

What you can see in the page above is the names of those learners who have been most active and successful. When you register on the forum and start using our tests, you automatically get your own individual progress page, too. This page shows you all your learning activities and reminds you to complete at least one test every single day.

And now more on how to improve your speaking skills. On our site you will find an online voice recorder which you can use to share voice messages with other learners. In addition, you will receive feedback on your pronunciation and accent from our native speakers. Since I know myself how difficult it is to record voice messages in English, I'd like to invite you to say 'thank you very much' in your native language. So far, users from China, Russia, Germany, Belarus, Bulgaria, India and Egypt have recorded their phrases and we really look forward to your recording too. You can hear the recordings and record your own here: How to say 'thank you' in your native language?

If you want to know how you can use the online voice recorder, you can take a look at the following images which is a step-by-step guide: How can I record my own voice?

So, I truly look forwarding to hearing from you.
