Why do you want to improve your English?

by Torsten Daerr

Good evening, Friend,

When you signed up for our online English course, you told me that you want to improve your English or help your students learn English. Now, that's an exciting goal and I'll do everything to achieve it. You will make my job much easier though if you tell me why you are learning English. The more we know about your current situation as well as your future plans, the better we can assist you. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. Oh, just a quick reminder: Please post your thoughts and ideas on the forum so we can all share them. If you send me your answers via email, it'll be difficult for me to get my team to support you.

Now, what is lesson 17 all about? You guessed that, right? -- we'll listen to some more questions by Sue Darville and if you like, you can even answer them. As usual, you will find the links to the texts and exercises at the bottom of this email. I'm sure we have already talked about the difference between closed and open questions, haven't we? Well, a closed question is one that allows only two answers -- yes or no. For example, 'do you speak English' is a closed question because you can either say 'yes, I do' or 'no, I don't. So, if a question starts with a verb, it's a closed question. On the other hand, open questions start with question words. Here is an example: Why do you want to improve your English? An open question can be answered by an open answer. This means, it's really up to you how you answer it.

With all those questions I bet you will soon become an expert interviewer or journalist :-)

A lot people have asked me how to learn new words or phrases as fast as possible. Well, there are a variety of different methods to learn vocabulary and I'd just like to give you a few tips. First of all, you should always try to learn word groups or entire phrases instead of separate words. So instead of trying to learn the meaning of the word "attention", it's much better to memorize the phrase "please pay more attention to this issue".

Please remember that you can take any test as often as you want. If you make a mistake or two on the first attempt, try it again you will see that your results improve. Soon you will get every question right.

And now it's time to listen to Sue's audio recording.

I hope to see you on the forum.
Regards,
Torsten
