All of us have our favourite sleeping position, be it on one side, our front, or flat on our back, while a good portion of us spend the night tossing and turning from one position to another. Side-sleeping is the most popular, with around 60% of us preferring to spend our nights like this. However, according to sleep experts, the best position for the perfect night’s sleep is also one of the least popular, and that is sleeping on your back. Only about 8% of us sleep like this. Sleeping flat on your back, with no pillow, can help you avoid back and neck pain, poor circulation, and headaches. However, if you’re someone who suffers from a condition like acid reflux, indigestion or heartburn, it’s not a good idea to sleep completely flat. Instead, use a pillow to keep your head higher than your chest and stomach, as this prevents acid from escaping our stomach.
Also, if you suffer from lower back pain, it’s recommended that you sleep flat on your back, but with some pillows under your knees. This elevates your legs and relieves pressure on your back. A word of warning though: Sleeping on your back massively increases your chances of snoring! Only about 7% of us prefer sleeping on our front. It’s a good thing that this is the least common position, as it’s also the most unhealthy! It puts pressure on both our muscles and internal organs. Front sleepers are more likely, the experts say, to wake up with stiffness and pain from an uncomfortable night’s sleep!
