The world is changing rapidly in a scary way. The environment is at risk. Ice caps are melting every day. The oceans are absorbing more and more heat. Scientists report that one-third of the Himalayas might dissolve in the next 80 years. In October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that if the earth warms by 1.5˚C, we will suffer much more than they initially expected.
The prospects are scary, but there is still hope. The UN Environment Program says that while the end of the 2020s did not bring the fall in greenhouse gas emissions that they expected, the world is in a much better place than it was 10 years ago.
There is more encouragement for brands to use renewable energy. Young people are being more sensitive to conserving energy. World leaders have made plans to cut 33 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year in 2030, i.e., more than half of today’s global annual greenhouse gas emissions.
While the news is filled with floods and bushfires, warming oceans and melting glaciers, we must continue to be hopeful. We must not stop the fight for a cleaner, safer earth.
