In 2012, the University of California, Berkeley formed its Berkeley Resource Center for Online Education (BRCOE). BRCOE is committed to providing a variety of resources for online learning through different initiatives. The Center advises, coordinates, and facilitates both credit and non-credit courses and online degree programs. BRCOE also offers Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as part of its MOOCLab initiative and partnership with edX. This three-year initiative funds and develops MOOCs in an effort to further its research in online education. Through Berkeley’s website, students can browse a catalogue of free online courses on different subjects. Course subjects offered by MOOCLab include blockchain technology, data science, marketing analytics as well as business and other academic writing. There are even courses on mindfulness, resilience to stress, empathy and emotional intelligence and the science of happiness. Once students find the right course for them, they can then decide whether to audit the course for free or pay a small fee in order to receive a Berkeley verified certificate upon completion of the course.
