One of the major concerns about robotics is that robots are here to take over people’s jobs, making humans redundant. However, engineers in the field of robotics argue that the robotic entities are here to assist and complement us, rather than replace us. Japan is years ahead of many other countries in the world in terms of incorporating robots in the workplace. It is widely known that Japan is facing great demographic challenges because it is rapidly aging while the birth-rate is plummeting. As a consequence, there is a major shortage of health workers working in elderly care facilities. One solution to this problem is the introduction of robots in these facilities. This is the case at the Hyogo nursing home, where the residents love Paro, the talking seal bot. Paro is a big hit because he doesn't need to maintain personal hygiene, eat, sleep, and nobody is allergic to him.
