Social media platforms have become an immensely significant part of human’s experience and existence. By offering a tremendous mélange of possibilities for impacting society and people’s perceptions, they have strengthened their position in modern life. There are numerous benefits from using social media platforms, such as: Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Their planetary success to a high degree is due to the open flow of information on a world’s scale, people’s ability to share life experiences, to fight a shared cause, to seek and get help, to connect with people from all over the world in order to communicate freely. Moreover, people are able to voice their opinions, fight repression, build their self-identity, learn about the world and its wondrous side, broaden their horizons, make memories and impact economies. Social media platforms empower individuals and encourage their active participation in society. However, it would be frivolous to solely focus on the positive aspects of social media, since there is an overwhelming body of evidence that its overuse can lead to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, loneliness and a lack of meaningful human contact. A recent survey has shown that Instagram is the platform which is the most detrimental to mental health, especially in young users. Although Instagram, a platform predominantly focused on photo-sharing and estheticism, can have a positive effect in terms of self-expression and fostering uniqueness, still it may be driving feelings of inadequacy and anxiety in young people.
