The retail industry is making profound transformations, particularly through the use of new technologies, in order to maintain a competitive in-store shopping experience for customers. Nike, for example, uses its mobile application to allow customers to browse items and then designate them to the fitting room to try on later. Another new technology is being implemented by Amazon Go, which has installed self-check machines equipped with cameras, computer vision technology and smart shelf sensors that work in unison to eliminate the check-out process all together; instead, customers take the items they want and are charged automatically after leaving the store. At certain Walmart’s, robotics are used to scan, monitor and restock inventory, eliminating the need for human labor. At retailers Macy’s, Urban Outfitters, and Timberland, beacons are used to send personalized messages and discount offers to shopper’s smartphones who are within the vicinity of the store.
