The UK government decided to fight air pollution by bringing forward a ban to eliminate diesel and petrol cars within the next 15 years. The ban caught some people off guard when it included hybrid vehicles. Unlike diesel and petrol cars, hybrid cars use an electric battery along with an engine running on fossil fuel. Although the benefits from reducing carbon emissions are more than great, other implications from the ban aren’t. The UK’s car industry possesses decades of experience and an immense talent regarding the production of petrol and diesel vehicles. In the next 15 years, much of the existing workforce will have to be retrained in order to start producing electric cars in order to put the UK on track for zero-carbon travel. One upside to this plan is that universities and start-ups are already working on different ways to power electric cars. The UK government is already investing a shy of £300 million in battery research, which is a process that will have to continue in order to secure the success of the complex transition from prototype to mass production.
